Falls Prevention And Balance

One third of adults aged over 65 fall one or more times each year, often leading to injury, disability and loss of independence.

This is often caused by:

  • Loss of strength due to muscle loss.
  • Reduced sensorimotor capabilities (eg coordination and balance)
  • Reduced proprioception (awareness of the body position)
  • Slower reactions (unable to correct a mis-step or loss of balance)

How does exercise help?
An appropriately developed exercise program for an adult at risk of falls will include exercise to address the above points. Exercises will include strength training for the legs, postural strengthening to help maintain an upright posture, balance exercise, improving hand-eye coordination and improving walking mechanics.
